Ozarks’ Coins Club Meeting Minutes
April 1, 2008
Our monthly meeting was held at the Discovery Center. We enjoyed soda and CiCi’s Pizza at 6:00 p.m. The auction began promptly at 6:30 p.m. There were sixteen (16) youth, and fifty five (55) adults signed in for a total of seventy one (71). President Cross called the meeting to order immediately after the auction at 7:15. He expressed concern and prayers for Raleigh and Nancy Redman who are leaving for St. Louis to await a lung transplant for Raleigh. Carol Katzfey is also still having some problems with health. Please keep all our members who are having difficulties in your thoughts and prayers. Maggie Kirwin won second place in a contest offered by Central States. Maggie also received recognition from Central States for being a straight A student. Congratulations to Maggie. Any youth may send a copy of their report card with straight A’s to Central States and receive recognition. See President Cross for information on when and where to send this information. Donovan Nicholson also received recognition when he went to Columbia, Missouri for State Wrestling.
We had many new members. They were Pat Kerr, Rose Marie Smith, Jackie Davis, Bob and Audree Morawe, Tom Washburn, and Cody Lowery (youth). Our visitors were Crystal and Seth Harris, Dustin Steward, and Brad and Stephanie McGatha. Welcome to all new members and visitors.
Jim Guy gave all the YN’s attending a foreign coin. Their homework is to find out information about their coin, such as country, where it is on a map, metal content and numerous other questions. They will research their coin and present it at the next club meeting. The YN’s themselves chose to do a presentation versus a report.
National Coin Week is in April. ANA is conducting a trivia hunt for youth. They have five (5) categories to find. They must find a coin with an animal, oldest coin they can find, one from a different place, the year of their birth, and one that is not a coin. They should see Jim Guy or Daniel Cross for more information on this ANA trivia hunt. There are fifty (50) clubs participating in this contest so far. Ozarks Coin Club would make fifty one (51).
Our next meeting will be May 6. Brian Fanton will be the guest speaker. Wendall Wolka will be our guest speaker on June 3. The board voted to have two (2) special speakers per year. Any club member that would like to make a presentation needs to let the board know. A reminder that the meeting in November will be November 11 and not election day of November 4.
The club held their election. Daniel Cross will be returning as President. Ed Mayer chose to step down due to long hours and extra work on the job. Jon Cunningham will be the Vice-President. Leon Cunningham will return as Treasurer. Nancy Redman chose to step down due to the upcoming health issues with Raleigh. Kathy Kirwin will be the new secretary. The three (3) board members will now consist of Stanley Hamm returning, Garry Avery, and Jim Guy. There was a tie between Garry Avery and Jim Wells. Jim decided to step down and save the re-vote.
The club took a vote on the amendment to the by-laws that had been printed in the Flying Eagle Newsletter the past few months. The change concerned the nomination process for the election. The vote passed with one (1) nay vote. Mark Blumenstock requested the right to speak regarding the issue. He questioned the lack of discussion and felt the club may not be following proper parliamentary procedures. After discussing the issue Mr. Blumenstock requested the issue be reconsidered. It was moved and seconded to have a re-vote on this matter. The vote received above the 2/3 majority required with a 70% margin - 28 for and 12 against.
The club had previously voted on having a petty cash account that required only one signature. There is much convenience in having a local representative to handle items in Springfield. The only ones allowed to sign would be President Daniel Cross, Treasurer Leon Cunningham and Secretary Kathy Kirwin. The pizza donation box collected $52.00 at this meeting.
